The Gold Medal Syndrome: Why Success Doesn’t Bring Satisfaction
Weekly Dose of Work Recovery Vol. 10.22.25
“Those who are not satisfied with a little, are satisfied with nothing.” -Epicurus
I can't get no, satisfaction…😒
Have you heard of the Gold Medal Syndrome? It's the phenomenon athletes face after achieving their wildest dreams. They expect euphoria, but after winning it all they often ask, is that all there is? The result can be painful feelings of loss and despair.
A business owner I heard speak at a women's funding conference, wildly successful by any measure and fresh off selling her seventh multi-million-dollar business, echoed the same sentiment. She shared that despite her huge work wins, it has never felt like enough.
These stories point to an important truth: there is no “there” there. The prized utopia of “success” so many of us chase doesn’t actually bring peace, joy, or true abundance.
This week I wrestled with my own, albeit far less exciting, version of the Gold Medal Syndrome. The boys' football season is over. MEA break is done. Now what?
Instead of chasing the next big thing, I'm intentionally choosing something far more uncomfortable: contentment. I challenged myself to feel satisfied no matter what I achieved, planned, or pursued.
It’s a practice I began this summer when I put things on pause, and it remains an ongoing battle. I still wrestle with the urge to push, distract, and strive. Hustle culture has always appealed to me because it lets me believe that if I just do more, maybe then I’ll finally be enough.
But I’ve discovered that peace only comes when I stop chasing what's next.
Realigning with contentment as my goal has created space for peace and presence. And oddly enough, it looks like baking banana bread with my 9 year old when he asks on a cold Tuesday afternoon 🧁
When guilt creeps in about not doing enough, I remind myself that I’m working on something new and deeply uncomfortable. I am learning to slow down and feel the quiet peace of contentedness, right where I am.
Satisfaction isn’t usually found in the next goal. Or even in a gold medal.
Genuine satisfaction is created in the space between desire and gratitude. And you can claim it now, right where you are, wherever that may be.
Take a moment this week to notice where you’re still chasing or waiting for some magical moment in the future. Then ask yourself: What if this moment, just as it is, was already enough?
Sometimes peace isn’t something we find. It’s what arrives when we stop striving.
