The Power of Pausing: Creating Mindful Transitions in a Rushing World
Weekly Dose of Work Recovery Vol. 3.26.25
Creating Mindful (Not Mindless, Rushing) Transitions Every Day
Last weekend, I watched my little sister walk into a new chapter of her life.
Weddings are, surprisingly, something we slow down for - we gather, reflect, and mark the shift with ritual of a wedding ceremony and a party. And it was an incredible day.
But in daily life, we tend to rush from one thing to the next, skipping the small transitions that can either enhance or detract from our well-being. Usually the latter.
Our bodies feel us rushing, even if we don’t acknowledge it consciously. The tension between work and home, stress and rest, focus and distraction? It’s often just a missed transition or pause - one our nervous system needed but never got.
At the wedding, I heard people tell my sister, “Take a deep breath and take it all in.” It’s advice we give in big moments, as if pausing is natural in our culture. But in reality, most of us have no idea what taking it all in actually looks like because we’ve trained ourselves to rush.
For centuries, people honored transitions with simple rituals. Take tea drinking. In many cultures, preparing and drinking tea wasn’t just about hydration - it was a moment to reset between tasks, a pause to process and be present. Now, we gulp coffee on the go, multitasking instead of marking a shift.
What if we reclaimed small moments of transition?
A deep breath before opening your laptop.
A short walk between work and family time.
A sip of coffee with full attention before your next task.
A lunch away from your desk.
Try inserting a mindful pause into your day. Pay attention to what shifts.
Your body is always talking—slowing down is how we start listening.

Links & Resources We Love Right Now
A listen: Storm Chaser is the new album by indie folk band Satsang fronted by Drew McManus was released last week and true to form, his songs have immense heart and searing truth embedded in them.
A learn: An increasing number of workers (69%) report feeling disconnected from their org's purpose and even more alarming, are unclear on how to meet job expectations, per Gallup. When work changes or a role morphs into something new, it's further evidence of a need to connect, slow down, and focus on clear communication.
A shoutout: The last fiction book I read - The God of the Woods - was absolutely STELLAR. Five star and kept me guessing right up until the end.
